I found the wedding at Cana story very compelling. I was intrigued by Jesus's initial reluctance to get involved because "My hour has not yet come." I want to know more about his "hour". Then when He reluctantly agreed, He didn't just fill the jars with wine as He could have. Rather He made the servants fill them with water first, as if requiring them to demonstrate their trust in Him through the effort required to fill them. I also thought it was very interesting that Jesus chose to keep the master of the banquet in the dark, so the bridegroom would get the credit for saving the best wine for last. But He let the servants in on it. I thought that was very characteristic of Jesus.

I thought the other story, at the temple courts in Jerusalem was also fascinating, but I found it to be a little more straightforward without a lot of subtleties to "unpack". (feel free to correct me here) But it showed another aspect of Jesus and a reminder of the fact that He hadn't come just to do "signs and wonders"....He was on a very serious mission.

The wedding story is so cute. I can see the twinkle in Jesus's eye as he teases his mother, and then she bustles about giving orders. 😊

Their relationship is on display here, respectful, loving, comfortable, safe and sweet. Their interaction is adorable. I love this insight into their family life and how close they were, and how broken she must have been to see him hanging on the cross. I can imagine her trying to catch his blood in her hands as if she could stem the flow of life leaving his body. And then Sunday came, and He rose from the dead and what joy for her to realize that he wasn't just her son, but also her Savior. That His blood was shed for her and for all of us. Blessed be the name of Jesus!!

I didn't understand it as playful. But I also have to remember when they called someone "woman", it was a formal way to address someone like "madam". I had to look at other translations because it sounded harsh and blunt to me.

I interpret it as she knew her son was the Son of God, and knew what he was capable of. He says it's not his time but then does it anyway. Has me questioning why.

I wasn't taking a doctrinal position here. I was thinking about relationship. Sometimes when we read the gospels, we almost see Jesus in a glass bubble because it is His story, and we focus on everything he said and did, and we should because it is the story of salvation. But it is also the story of the people around Jesus, the relationships he had and the love he bore for people. In this very short interaction we see Jesus and His mother interacting briefly, but this comes out of a lifetime of relationship and how much they loved each other. She raised him, washed his clothes, fed him, disciplined him (the whole I'm about My Father's business when he was twelve) and loved him. I imagine they played games together, she took him to school, tucked him in at night and told him stories. You see in this brief encounter at the wedding that he didn't argue with her, and she did bustle about organizing the servants and telling them to do whatever he said. And he did. It's sweet. He doesn't contradict or argue with her, he just made really good wine. :-)

Hi Linda......You have me wondering if I misinterpreted Jesus's comment. I thought he was seriously not wanting to show his powers quite yet when his mother asked him to provide wine. Your impression is that he's being playful with her? Maybe others could chime in as to their thoughts on this?
