Proverbs 5
It may seem strange that after four chapters of telling us why we need wisdom for life, Solomon would jump right into writing almost three chapters on adultery. But remember, the Father writing these proverbs to his son is trying to get the son to marry wisdom over folly, and to seek the Lord over passions of the flesh. Chapters on adultery following chapters regarding the pursuit of wisdom may seem like a strange contrast, but that is because the quickest, easiest and most devastating way to take us off the path of wisdom is to lure us into a path of sexual immorality. Sexual immorality—and specifically adultery—destroys your marriage, your family, your friendships, and ultimately, your relationship with God. These warnings are given so early on in life to prevent the kind of devastation it will bring.
Verses 15-16 (MSG) stuck out to me: “Do you know the saying, ‘Drink from your own rain barrel, draw water from your own spring-fed well’? It’s true. Otherwise, you may one day come home and find your barrel empty and your well polluted.” I love the imagery of love between two partners as being likened to a well. The water level in a well most often depends on the depth of the well. Therefore, dig deep! Go deep with your partner. Intimacy is not just physical. It’s also emotional, relational and spiritual. Carve out time for your spouse! Love well, invest in your marriage! It will keep you from running dry and getting polluted. Remember, “invest in the barrel or there is peril!” HA! #SMH #dadjoke

"If the grass is greener on the other side of the fence, maybe it's because you haven't fertilized your own grass."
amen
I have had family and friends who foolishly believed the grass was truly greener on the other side and realized too late they were wrong. Bottom line is to strive to be the best spouse you can be by faithfulness, love and Grace and your relationship will flourish. God is truly good
amen
If one strays it only leads to death. Why not have the life God promises you if you only ask and receive. It's never better on the other side. One must think, if the grass is greener over there, it's most likely a septic's leech line;)
I see this chapter in three pieces. The first 8 verses are warnings being yelled through a megaphone. Verses 9-14 clearly state the eternal (repeat eternal) consequences. There is no such thing as a one-night stand. Then the visual of verse 22 alone should be enough to scare us straight. "The iniquities of a man ensnare him and he is held fast in the cords of his sin." And if that isn't enough.... in his first letter to the Corinthians, Paul says "But he who is joined to the Lord, becomes one spirit with him. Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body. Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body." (6:17-20)
Warning against adultery->
As a child, my dad spoke on this from a Biblical point quite often. I didn't quite understand it then. He talked about lust in the heart.
"But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart."
â€â€Matthew‬ â€5‬:â€28‬ â€ESV‬‬
The idea is to take everything thought captive.
"We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ,"
â€â€2 Corinthians‬ â€10‬:â€5‬ â€ESV‬‬
It's not easy, but it's possible, in Christ.
He gives warning, but also gives a beautiful description of an intimate relationship with your spouse. It's pleasurable, "intoxicating", and delightful.
Those are much more exciting than words like snare, death, & bitter.
